What I do

Straight Answers. Hard Fights.

I take on the cases that change people's lives: criminal charges and OWI or DUI arrests, serious injuries, civil rights violations, business and contract disputes, real estate fights and appeals.

The cases are different. How I work is not. You get a straight read on where you stand, I step in early, and I prepare every case as if it will be tried, in state and federal court in Michigan and Nevada. Start with the Legal Library, or read the blog.

A few things to know before you do anything.

If you are arrested

You have the right to stay silent and the right to a lawyer. Say it out loud, clearly, and then stop talking. Do not try to explain your way out.

If your license is at risk

An OWI or DUI arrest also puts your license at risk, on its own deadlines. Missing one can cost you the right to drive, whatever happens in court.

If a dispute is brewing

Keep every email, text and contract. Do not delete anything. Destroying records can turn a contract fight into a much bigger problem.

Michigan Nevada

If you were hurt

Get medical care first and keep every record. Do not give a recorded statement to an insurance company before you talk to a lawyer.

Michigan Nevada

If your rights were violated

Write down names, badge numbers and what happened while it is fresh, and save any video. Claims against police and government have strict deadlines.

Michigan Nevada

If you lost in the trial court

Appeal deadlines are short and strict. Get the ruling to a lawyer right away.

About me

I am the lawyer you deal with.

For 15 years I have taken on prosecutors, police departments, insurers and well-funded corporations in state and federal courts in Michigan and Nevada. I lived in Las Vegas for more than fifteen years and am based in Grand Rapids now, with an office in each city. I am a graduate of Thomas M. Cooley Law School, and I hold a degree in criminology and criminal justice from the University of South Carolina.

I defend people charged with misdemeanors and felonies in both states, and I have sued police departments, jails and cities over civil rights violations. I also handle personal injury cases, business, contract and real estate disputes for owners and individuals, and appeals in state and federal courts. I obtained a published reversal by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in Rivera v. Corrections Corporation of America (CoreCivic). Prior results do not guarantee, warrant or predict a similar outcome. As a law student I wrote a published article arguing that the federal sports betting ban, PASPA, should be repealed. The Supreme Court struck it down in 2018.

I do not hand your case to someone else. You get a straight read on the strengths and weaknesses of your case, and a lawyer who prepares to try it. Read more about the firm and its two offices.

Mitchell very clearly outlined the laws and how we were affected by them. He was both sympathetic and professional. He very promptly acted on our behalf and kept us informed at all stages.

I retained Mitch for a personal case and he was very understanding. He always took my calls and helped me any way he could. I will use him again if I ever need a lawyer.
